A Real Pony Race for a Bridle is a mixed media installation exhibited as part of the group exhibition Summer Collection ’97, for which artists were invited to respond to artefacts housed in the gallery’s permanent collection. Inspired by a 19th century poster advertising a pony race in a local park, Best organised a gymkhana in Burgess Park, South London. The work comprises material from the day’s events including video documentation of the races, an album of photographs, pin-board displays and the original poster. The work demonstrates the artist’s ongoing collaborative and cross-disciplinary practice involving the participation of local groups and communities.

Exhibited as part of Summer Collection ’97, curated by students on the MA Fine Arts Administration and Curatorship course at Goldsmiths College.

MAKE A PIN-BOARD:

Back in 1997, artist Anna Best created an artwork comprising of four communal
pin-boards. We love these pin-boards.

We like the open invitation for people to each respond to what they saw around them;
we like the diversity of the information; and we like the way everyday, throwaway
brought into relationship with meaning and experience, and elevated to create a
shared archive of the days events.

CREATE!
Create and share your own pin-board to document a dialogue of importance to you.
A dialogue that enables a sharing of the diverse thoughts, opinions, feelings or
memories of everyone taking part in the conversation.

TALK!
The important thing is to establish a theme, and invite collective responses.
What's important to your students or your teaching practise? To your school
community? Your friends? What is it you would like to discuss in order to explore
change?
EVERYDAY MATERIALS:
Use paper ephemera - receipts, postcards, handwritten notes, maps,
diagrams or adverts. Make drawings, take snapshots, include stickers, badges or
photographs. Scribbles on the back of an envelope. Thoughts captured in fragments.
It's up to you.

SUBMIT!
When your pin-board is heaving, or even when it isn't, share a photo with us at
info@makingsense.online and we will showcase it for you on Making Sense.

Make sure you include your school name, the date, year group, and the theme of the
pin-board.
